Including images in your blog can help illustrate a point or add visual appeal to your blog. Once you find an image that you're legally allowed to use, you can upload it to your blog post. However, what if that image is very large or requires some kind of editing such as cropping or has to be changed to a different file format? Rather than invest in an expensive image editing software program, take advantage of one of the free photo editing sites that can be found online. Following are four popular and free photo editing sites that can help you resize, edit and enhance images for your blog.
Paint.net is a completely free photo editing software application that can be used by people who use Windows-based computer systems. It's easy to use and provides a wealth of features for users who want to do more than simply resize or crop an image, such as creating layers, special effects and more. The Paint.net software is downloaded directly to your computer hard drive, so you don't have to rely on the speed or availability of your Internet connection when you use it.
Picnik.com is an incredibly simply free photo editing website. To use Picnik.com, you'll need to register, then simply upload the images you want to edit from your hard drive to Picnik.com, edit them then resave them to your hard drive. Advanced features are available for a fee. Since Picnik.com is used online, you have to have a working (and hopefully speedy) Internet connection anytime you want to edit an image. ShrinkPictures.com is a completely free photo editing site that allows you to resize images and save them in jpeg format. The options for photo editing are extremely limited, but ShrinkPictures.com is very easy to use. A small amount of advanced features are available through a free Google Pack download. Since ShrinkPictures.com is used online, you need to have a working (and hopefully, speedy) Internet connection whenever you want to use it to edit images. Gimp.org (or The Gimp, as it's often called) us a more advanced free photo editing program that must be downloaded to your computer. Downloads are available for both Windows and Mac users. The Gimp works similarly to expensive photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop in terms of its features and functionality. If you're looking for an advanced, free photo editing option, The Gimp is a great option. Since it's downloaded to your hard drive, you don't have to worry about having Internet access when you're editing an image.
SumoPaint
ReplyDeleteSumoPaint is another free online and desktop photo editor with basic and advanced features. You can upload a photo from your computer or from a URL.
Basic overall photo editing like brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, color balance, and levels can be achieved from the menu bar on top of the editor.
The left pane has the drawing tools which include several shapes. One, in particular, is called the Symmetry tool, which “mirrors” a shape’s stroke, creating a symmetric pattern.
Besides tweaking images, I find Sumopaint to be useful in creating simple logos using the text and brush tools.
Other than the ads that appear on both sides of the web editor and intermittently crash Chrome (the tool uses Flash to run the web version), this photo editor gets the job done easily and is more than suitable for users who are not photo editing experts.

Simply searching the Hashtag #VSCO on Instagram will reveal the huge community of photographers and casual users that use VSCO every day, a testament to the app’s popularity.

Paint.net is (at least in our opinion) the simplest option on the list. It still comes with a ton of powerful features like layers, adjustments, and user-created plugins, but is simple enough that complete newcomers can grasp it immediately. The features are across the top, and filters are accessible from a drop-down menu.
ReplyDeleteSome of the special effects are pretty cool: sharpen, blur, distort, emboss, etc. You can even get some Instagram-esque vintage effects in there for good measure. We don’t want to waste too much time on this one. It’s got a lot of features, an easy interface, and a simple layout. If you’re struggling with others on this list, then stick with the easiest option.
